Halifax are really difficult to get an account with. I had a joint account with my ex and when we split he was approved for a current account and I got cardcash. IMO he's crap with money and I'm not. Recently my daughter was offered a current account with them having had a cardcash account for a few years from about age 13. She is also bad with money although she does have money go into her account regularly. My son on the other hand has also had a cardcash account since he was 13 and had employment so regular income since he was 15. He applied for a student account with Halifax but was declined. My conclusion - Halifax will give you an account if they can make some money out of you through charges but if you never go overdrawn or use a credit card etc then they aren't interested. My son was accepted by Natwest by the way - and got a free railcard.

  • Its actually harder to get a student account then the normal current account, because the interest fre overdraft

but to the OP - do you have accounts elsewhere. are you using your parents address and not a student house?
  • I'm opening a Halifax Current a/c to use as my day-to-day account (for direct debits, cash withdrawals etc...) to build up a credit history within Halifax.

Next year, I'm going to ask them to upgrade it to the Student Account in the hope that my exisiting "relationship" with them will mean I can get the maximum OD!

Anyone see any problems in me doing this?
  • nope techno-geek sounds good , but you do not initially get the large overdraft to start off, - they have to see the student loan going in first - so they say approx 4 months after as they have to assess affordability
