You don't have Direct Debits on a Debit Card- this is a common misconception and you wouldn't believe the amount of people who think DDs and DCs are one and the same.
There are 2 scenarios here:
1. You have continuous payment authorities on your old Debit Card which may have rolled over to your new card, depending on how the old one was cancelled. If there is insufficient money in your account then they *should* bounce.
2. You have proper Direct Debits set up on your BANK ACCOUNT. These have nothing to do with your Debit card at all. If there is insufficient money in your account on the day the Direct Debits are due then you will have a further 2 scenarios:
A. The bank pays them, making you go overdrawn, to which you will incur unauthorised overdraft fees with your bank.
B. Your bank refuses the Direct Debits to which you will incur an unpaid item fee for each one. You will then be contacted by the companies the Direct Debits are for advising they want their money- BEWARE they may attempt to re-collect the money in something like 10 days time (they *should* advise you in writing when exactly).Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.0 -

Regardless of whether you have an overdraft or not, if you don't have the money to pay the Direct Debits you have to cancel them yourself otherwise your bank WILL charge you one way or another.
You need to give at least 24 hours notice to your bank for most banks (some require longer). Cancelling on the day they are due is too late.
