Part Exchanging Car - What Do They Check???

Bought a car at auction 2 weeks ago. It's got a dodgy exhaust, gasket leak, dodgy power steering and bad suspension noise.

I want rid of it, and have been told it's best to part exchange.

What checks will the dealer do when I p/x it???

Would they p/x for a car of similar value or will i need to put some cash in the deal??
Regards

  • I traded a car with a blown head gasket in they never even started it up, they never asked so I didn't tell them.
Nothing to see here, move along.

It depends what your trading in against and how realistic you are in the cars value. The only sure thing is that you will need money on top of your px.

The dealer will put it back in the auction, and pocket the difference you could have made had you done it yourself.

Dealers will only start it up, that's about it.

As said though, if it's a complete shed (< £1000) , you might as well auction it yourself.

forget the dealer put some K-seal in the coolant and some exahust past round the blowing exhaust and put it back into the auctions. delaer will give you rock bottom price, and they will look over it and start it

Edited for accuracy - they don't look over it at all especially if it's a big firm.

We go over our Px's. Usually we find something quite nasty and value accordingly.

9 times out of 10 there is something hidden...

I traded mine in and all he wanted to do was for me to start it up, so he could listen to it for a bit (he was a new/young lad, so unless it sounded like a bag o' nails he'd have never known the difference), then he took the mileage.

He then phoned the "bloke that takes in XYZ models from them" and told him the car/year/mileage and was offered a price over the phone. He then offered me an amount. I was happy.

    Job done.

When we part exed our last car they did drive it whilst we test drove theirs. Luckily the only problem was the air conditioning (which was a saga on its own). This was with a small dealer not linked to a brand.

When we part exed a previous one they kicked the tyres, checked for dents and that was about it, didn't even start it up. Which was good because it was only a few weeks away from needing a new exhaust. That was with a main brand dealer.

    It depends I suppose.

Just don't trade it in to a small dealer that specialises in selling the kind of crap from auction that the bigger dealers will send your knackered PX to.
