American Express Refund - Burdensome and Slow

in Credit cards
Ok - we messed up. We transferred £5k direct from our bank account to the wrong Amex account and it ended up in credit by £5k.
We asked Amex to refund it and they responded that I first had to prove that I had sent the money in the first place by sending a fax or a letter to them. The refund would then take 7 to 10 days!
We have always paid our Amex from our bank account by either transfer or direct debit so they already have a good track record of the fact that its my account the money came from. So what's this all about and why should I send them a copy of my bank statement with all of the other detail on it. They have no right to know it.

They are probably just covering themselves in the event that something comes back to hit them later. Annoying, but they have your money and they are in control. Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

Anything over £4,999.99 will need to be accounted for.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -
As others have said, the delay is down to money laundering procedures ie. what you are doing looks like you are money laundering, so you do have to provide proof of the origin of the funds.
The faster you do it, the faster your refund. The only way you could speed it up would be to ask to speak to a manager and get them to intercept your fax and them take it straight to whoever needs it.0
