Car Tax Questions.

I've just bought a car without tax and I have a few questions.

1. Do I have to wait for the old owner to send off the registration certificate making me the registered owner before I can tax the car? Or is the New Keeper supplement enough to get tax?

2. If I take the relevant documents -MOT, Insurance (Cover note OK?) and New Keeper Supplement - to the Post Office with payment, do they give you the tax disc over the counter or does it get sent to you though the post? How long does it take to get the tax disc if I apply online?

Thanks (Apologies for the basic questions - it's my first car)!

Wendy.

    Hi,

You'll be fine to tax your car with the new keeper supplement and an Insurance cover note in a post office, I taxed my last car that way, don't forget the MOT too!! If you go into the post office you'll get your Tax disk over the counter. If you renew over the phone or online, from experience it can take a week or 2 to come through the post.

Although it's not commonly known you are allowed to drive until the 5th of the following month on an expired tax disk, providing you have renewed online or over the phone, this is to allow an extra 5 days for delays in the post.

    Hope this helps!!

Not quite. You can drive the vehicle for 5 working days after the expiry of the old disc providing you have taxed it over the phone or on-line before the expiry of the old disc.
