Cant use frontline- what else???

The vet thinks Mittens is having some sort of reaction to Frontline (he HATES it and is ill for a couple of days after treatment) She gave me Stronghold instead, which he was fine with but it cost me £37.50 for 3 pipettes  I've looked online for more Stronghold, but they all request a prescription. There seems to be a couple more treatments we could try (e.g. Bob Martin) but I dont know how effective they are as I dont know anyone that uses them.

Does anyone else use a flea treatment other than Frontline or Stronghold?

We have never used Frontline or Stronghold for our cats or dogs. For the cats, we tend to treat the house routinely. They will have a flea collar each, but we focus more on treating house and bedding, etc. Never yet seen a flea in this house!

For our old dog Suki we used the Johnson's Flea Tablets (the ones for larger dogs as she was 25kg) http://www.petsathome.com/shop/johnson-s-4fleas-for-puppies-and-small-dogs-6-pack-tablets-15390 there are tablets available for cats too.

Those tablets are an absolute miracle as far as we're concerned. We can't praise them enough. They start to work almost immediately and they really do kill 100% of fleas. You can see the little b*ggers dropping down dead

Johnson's is also the brand we use for treating the house and stuff... we've never had to 'get tough' with the cats and use anything else.

ETA: If you wanted to get the slightly cheaper Stronghold online, you can just ask your vet for the prescription and tell them you'll be getting the medication elsewhere can't you?

I have two dogs, so I use the dog equivalent of this:

    http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Veterinary-Flea-Drops-for-Cats-Kittens-pack-of-3/productinfo/FLEACAT3/

The dogs have never had any problems while I've been using it, either with fleas or reactions to the product.

I've assumed Mittens is a cat - sorry if I got it wrong! :o If you need flea treatments for a dog, this is what I use:

  • Advocate is really good & you can get it for dogs & cats, it treats fleas & worms too. If you go to a website called Pet Care Mart it seems pretty reasonable :T. I've used it on my 2 cats for the past year or so & they've never had fleas!

Whoops- yes Mittens is a cat :rotfl:

Thanks for the suggestions :T We dont have a flea problem, but prevention is better than trying to rid the poor cat and the house of the little blighters.

I use the vet strength Bob Martin one (available from Supermarkets and Pet Shops) with no ill effects on my two cats (it also works 'cos the cats haven't got fleas!). Also the Johnson's one - the more expensive one in a pink (I think) box works too.

One of my local vets does buy a 6 pack and get 3 free which is effectively £38 for 9 so cheaper than the Petcaremart prices...it is worth phoning around, pets meds vary so much in price.

There are lots of post around warning owners NOT to use Bob Martin products as they have been linked to severe reactions in animals.
If your cat has reacted badly to frontline then I really would try to limit the amount of strong chemicals you use directly on her ( him? ) Feeding a tiny sprinkle of Brewers yeast powder ( holland and Barratt ) each day can keep fleas away!

Paddypaws101- thanks for letting me know about Bob Martin- i'd seen it in the supermarket but didn't know what it was like.

I was initially told Mittens was a female, so off I went and got pink litter tray, purple food bowls and a nice warm pink baby blanket for the basket. I picked him up, got him home and discovered he certainly was not a she :rotfl: I didn't mind though- I wouldn't change him for the world :D
(I did get him some non-girlie items though so he didn't end up with a complex ;) )
