I heard that Egg was taken over by Barclays, and that if they cannot produce the original agreement you had with Egg that you can get the debt written off. Any truth to this?

Debt isnt written off, just not enforceable via the courts. They will have your statments proving you spent the cash0

It might be true that Barclays might take over Egg from Citigroup which is in a terrible mess but wether or not it is true, you'll still have to pay for your debt...0

If you were approached by the authorities and asked to produce your passport and you could not, would it be then fair to say that as you can't prove that you are a UK citizen that you should be de-ported?Bloodheart wrote: »Any truth to this?Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? Ha, best way yet to start a philosophical discussion on how the government can do things the private sector cant...well done.
I chuckled a bit at the notion of the British government deporting someone who didnt have a passport (what progress that would be for a country that bends over and takes it up the read end from immigrants, legal or otherwise).
Just as an FYI (to everyone): A passport is just a travelling document and not a requirement for proof of residency or citizenship. (Loads of folks born in their respective homelands never get a passport unless they intent to travel).

The whole point of the analogy was to get the message to the OP that just because the Bank can not produce a legal document that the debt does not exist.
The debt does exist as do the monthly statements, CCTV footage from the shops where the card was used so if this was challenged in court then it would be fair to say the OP have fraud charges brought against them for obtaining goods/services by deception?

This kind of thing attributed to the credit crunch! I am riddled with debt but am paying it back. If you borrow money pay it back simple!
If you took out a credit facility knowing you werent going to pay it back then this in my eyes is fraud!
C'mon people grow up and pay your debts!! You would soon complain if the cash point only gave you a tenner when you asked for £50!
If your struggling to repay then negotiate with your creditors, if they dont help then seek professional advice. 2yrs and I will be debt free and proud!________________________________________

Egg is Citi Bank, and nothing to do with Barclays.
You still have to pay the debt. Sorry. My mortgage was with Standard Life. they were taken over by Barclays. I still have to pay it.0 -
Agreed, however lets not argue semantics?
Yeah that one was just as an FYI as a general note - i did like the sentiments of your post - most of my reply was just me being a wiseass. The whole point of the analogy was to get the message to the OP that just because the Bank can not produce a legal document that the debt does not exist.

Yeah i agree with all that and tbh when a lending institute was taken over before these issues did arise to prove it wasnt a valid reason to say debt shouldnt be repaid (no CCA) but now, since the Bailouts and a ton of them became bank holding comanies (or their parent companies did) to qualify for their 25 billion bucks, there is some sort of formal requirement to pass on previous agreements and information from customers, which is even exhempt by the DPA.
I would wish more people would egg (no pun intended) the OP on to try see if he can try avoid paying and watch him get him get his comeuppance in bankruptcy court by a not too sympathetic judge...0 -
