Gloss drips, wavy effect ARGH

OK

So Ive been painting up the flat to sell and I have been exceptionally careful but still managed to get that ripply wavy effect from glossing one of the 4 doors ive done so far. Now suffice to say its not THAT bad, youd have to really be picking fault to see it, but its not good enough for me.

I tried everything yesterday to salvage it, Is there ANYTHING else I can do to get it right, aside from ripping the door off its goddamn hinges and just buying a new one

Cheers in advance

lynz

Ps how do you get gloss paint out of your hair, aside from cutting it out? Ive cut quite a bit out now, loath to do more, white spirit hasnt worked.

I've found the easiest way to gloss a door is to use a small foam roller. They're only a couple of pounds to buy, but the finish you get is great. No runs or 'wavy lines', etc.
Try a quick rub over the door with some sandpaper, wipe over with a bit of white spirit/sugar soap. Let the door dry, and away you go.

    I hate painting doors!

Sand down thouroughly, white spirit (as mentioned above)

Use less paint then you think you need and really work it in with the brush

Never paint straight from the tin, always transfer a minimal amount to a container, this helps to keep the paint fluid.

An open paint tin will start to dry and so thicken making brush marks etc.

Lynz, you've got "curtains". Looks like a wave across the door running down it? Let it dry, sand it back and repaint it.

    So starting again!

I have got a gloss roller, but it put far too much on so I took it off and dried it down and then repainted with a brush.

    Will have another go

Jeez no idea how people do this for a living

  • As already said above, sand down and repaint - less paint more time. If you feel it's a dificult door, take it off it's hinges, lay it on a pasting table/work bench and paint horizontal - paint will self level and give a great finish even if you overload it!

Gloss roller for me too - you do need to just dip it in the paint and then roll it across the tray first.

As for the hair, going through it with combs of decreasing teeth sizes (wide right down to very narrow) should get it out eventually - a lice comb will usually whip it right off the hair. (How do I know this?) And next time, wear a shower cap (preferably the really cheap plastic kind) while you're painting!
