what checks are done when opening an account

May need to get an account for hubby as we have joint one but dont want to be associated financially with him due to some debts that have come to light (bit of a shock to me!)The current bank is now miles away so am thinking of getting him maybe an internet one or another one after just downloading the list of basic accounts. He doesnt have any ccjs at this address yet and has been here for 4 years. I am worried though that if he opens another bank account this will somehow flag up to other debtors I dont know about that the person they want is now 'here'.I dont know how his current debtors traced him here but suspect it was either through the elctoral register which shows his DOB or maybe the joint account we opened but I know they never asked for his previous address so maybe it wasnt that.any help would be handy. It may be best just not to get him an account I dont know.

  • One of the money saving guides discusses joint finances. Have a look at them. It won't be too hard to find

    Hope this helps

with regards to what checks are made, at a minimum I would think that if your husband applies for anything they will ask for his previous addresses, and that information will be fed back to whichever credit agency they use. I believe that's the idea of credit agencies. Has your husband not applied for ANY credit since leaving his previous address 4 years ago?
Companies can trace via the electoral roll (I work for a debt collection company and my colleague was showing me today one of the search engines and it had lists of people with a given name in a particular area) and I believe for financial services companies they can also use the credit reference agencies.
Maybe this is a stupid question (??) but why hasn't your husband admitted to his debts? and why isn't he paying them? It sounds like a bomb waiting to explode to me ....
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
  • No, since he got into debt about 5-6 years ago he has never applied for any form of credit. I dont know why he is refusing to even admit to his debt! As far as I am concerned he is morally liable for them and I can see us coming to a head about this soon. I am not mad with him for getting into debt as there were all kinds of reasons but I am so annoyed with him for burying his head in the sand over the fallout. I think the only way that he could have been traced was through the electoral register. he still lives in the same city even though its a way from where he lived. But however he was found I dont want my (good) credit history to be in any way jepardised by what happened to him before I even knew him. I tried talking to him last night about getting the account changed into just his name but he wasnt recetive. If he refuses to do even this then I shall cancel the joint account we have and hope that its not too late for some kind of financial jointness to have been made.At the moment its only letters and no further action has been taken so I assume if I lose all joint financial situations with him now then only he will be affected.
