I recently smashed the screen of my mobile but want to extract some photographs from it. I bought one of these cables:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CA-50-USB-DATA-CABLE-LEAD-NOKIA-2760-5000-7070-Prism-/170479353178?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_MobilePhones_MobilePhoneAccesories_MobilePhoneDataCables_JN&hash=item27b15c7d5a
but when I connect it while running Nokia PC-Suite Ver 7.1.51.0 it doesn't recognise the mobile is connected. The mobile is powered up and not locked. Any suggestions?

Have you checked that PC Suite is "listening" on the right type of interface?

IIRC it supports IRDA and Bluetooth as well as USB, so if your PC/laptop has either of those it may be defaulting to the wrong connection type.

Do you have the necessary drivers installed?
Also you would normally get an option on connecting your phone flash up on the screen (obviously not in your case)
On this option menu is usually 2 or 3 options like phone mode, mass storage mode and sometimes modem etc.
you could try blindly pressing "ok/enter" on your phone, if that doesn't work restart and press down and then enter, if it still doesnt work press down twice and then enter. make sure you allow the phone time to boot up to reach the menu.

Alternatively screens are fairly cheap on ebay, so it might be worth repairing it yourself if you feel up to the challenge

fwor - PC Suite allows you to select "cable", "infrared" or "bluetooth". I am selecting "cable".

dragon934 - I understand from the Nokia site that this version of PC Suite has the drivers already built in. I've just tried the method you described but still no luck.

    Donnie - It's a 5000d-2.

When you plug the mobile in what option pops up on the phone?
"PC Suite", "Mass Storage", "Media Transfer" & "Connect PC to web"

it should ask you what one to use, select "PC Suite" it should then go through an install of drivers on your PC.
check under "Tools" / "Settings" / "Connections" / "USB"; Make sure "Ask on Connection" is set to "YES"

The screen is broken and I can't tell what is on it.

However, I can just about see the first and last characters on the top line (just below battery status etc). It doesn't seem to change when I connect it to the computer so maybe the option you mention is not set. Keying through the menus from memory I can't see one that seems to start with a "T" for tools.

hm... with a broken screen it may be hard to change settings!

You can pick up a LCD for hte Nokia 5000 for around £20 or so, it's easy to replace it yourself if it's worth it.

only hope is that someone else on here has a 5000 and can tell you the key strokes required...

dragon934 mentioned in his post about screens being available on eBay but I can't see any for this model. Any other suggestions of where to look or any other model numbers that use the same screen?
