Blue screen - crashing - no safe mode?

Hi,
I wondered if you could give me some advice on a packard bell tower pc running windows xp.
My son was using it normally 2 days ago, when the power cord was tripped and it shut down and he said it restarted and continued to use it as normal.
Today on booting it is stuck loading and gets to first windows logo then flashes blue screen, (white writing about 1/2 page worth) but so quick that it can't be read, goes back to loading again. I have tried to run safe mode but although I can select the option it simply doesn't do it.
I tried last known good config which doesn't do anything
I ran a chkdsk and it found errors, which I then told it to repair. Still doing the same crashing loop. I had to hold down the power button to get it to quit and shut down.
I do know a little bit about computers, but wasn't sure exactly what to try next?
thanks in advance,
Donna

Run chkdsk again to see if the errors are still there. Then let us know. It could be your HDD. In the meantime disconnect any peripheral hardware you might have connected too.If disconnecting hardware resolve the issue, reconnect them one at a time until you find the problem.0 -
I'll give that a try and get back to you,
Thank you for taking the time to read my post.pinkpinkfizz

Boot up using your original Windows XP disk and do a repair install, this should replace any corrupt files and get you up and running!!0

Okay no errors found on second chkdsk, problem persists :undecided
Trying to remember where I put the recovery disk/s?
(I've had pc for such a long time)
Is that the windows disks mentioned for repair? If I recall correctly everything came pre-installed and I created recovery disks..pinkpinkfizz

Yes, those sort of discs would probably be a big help in your case. It might still be worth disconnecting all your hardware if it lets you boot into windows at least then you can get to your desktop0

I only have Monitor, keyboard and mouse attached - all of which are operating normally
i think the disks are "archived" in the loft. I'll need to wait until my DH comes home, as I'm on crutches at the moment following a spider bite.pinkpinkfizz
