Free Parking - Portsmouth to IOW

Hoping to take a day trip to the IOW from Portsmouth (Gunwharf) to Ryde as a foot passenger.

Is there any free street parking within walking distance of Portsmouth (Gunwharf)? Happy to walk up to about 1 mile.

Thanks!

The only free parking is only for 2 hours (I think)

    You on the Catamaran?

Can't you come to Portsmouth by public transport? If not, you might find easier parking in Southsea and catch the hovercraft.

The train goes directly to the Catamaran.

I assume the OP wants to save money on parking charges. If the cost of Bus/Train is more than parking then there's little point.

Yes, thanks, I am taking the family so the cost of the trains is too much!

I've been to Portsmouth a couple of time before and felt sure there were some areas nearby where you could park on the street with no restrictions.....any ideas?....perhaps somewhere towards Southsea?

Depending on when you are going, and whether you have already booked, some of the Wightlink deals for a car and passengers work out little dearer than travelling as foot passengers. This isn't the case if you will be going on a 2 for 1 offer though.

Unfortunately, nearly all of Portsmouth has now been made residents only with non-residents being allowed 2 hours in each zone. Five years ago, I could have suggested a whole bounty of places with free parking but now there is no-where within walking distance.

All of the streets in and around Gunwharf/Old Portsmouth are residents parking. If you were getting the catamaran you could park on one of the side roads south of Goldsmiths Avenue, Fratton (somewhere like Orchard Road, Telephone, Road); 2 minute walk (via the footbridge) on to Fratton station and 2 stops to Portsmouth Harbour. The new retail park near Fratton Park is peopled by PPC's as is the nearby Asda so I'd not recommend those locations. I can't think of any train out of the Harbour station that doesn't stop at Fratton on the way back.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

Indeed, they all stop at Fratton.

I'm at a loss for free parking as well, I'm afraid. That said, I don't venture into town too often now.

Wightlink have a special arrangement with the Gunwharf Quays car park, which is probably the nicest car park around the ferry terminal area. See HERE for details. The offer price is £7 for up to 24 hours, usual price is £10 for 7-10 hours or £20 for 10-24 hours. The Coucil car parks are £10 for between 8-24 hours but are probably less secure. Probably take around 10 mins to get to the ferry from there.

An off peak return fron Fratton is £2.10 for an adult but the train stops a few steps from the ferry so viable if you are a couple but the reidents are hoping for a residents parking scheme around the roads in HO87s post so it probably gets busy there.
