I did see the urban homesteaders on tv once and was impressed by the set up. I too read a lot of survivalist stuff and it is very thought provoking. I just wish I could buy more in bulk. Just found a place called Jolleys near home for may animals feed, takes the cost per day down to pennies. gave up on petshops long ago, they must make a fortune splitting bags of feed and selling it on at a quid a bag. Even wild bird food is much cheaper and though not essential Dh loves feeding his birds.
I love homemade jam, you know whats in it and though not as cheap as the economy stuff there is simply no comparison. I am lucky that I live 10 mins (on foot) from a large reservoir with loads of brambles and Dd and I have always enjoyed yearly pilgramage. There is nothing so rewarding as free food is there?Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
All the old bats in the Rural make jam and if I were brave enough - or desperate enough - I could go along to the sale of works and coffee mornings in the village hall (2 miles down the road) and buy jam .... Hmm, wonder what they'd do if I bought in bulk ?
"I'll take it all please. All 3 jars" LOL!!0 -

I yearn for this lifestyle, technically i live in deepest somerset but quite an urbanised area, i dug up the quite pointless flower beds to be replaced with veg and have a very small veg patch (still waiting on my new allotment application)
I can go months without visiting a supermarket (online shopping) and have taken a re-usable/make do and mend approach to babies and children but thats about it.
I would dearly love to actually live in the rear end of nowhere, with no neighbours to complain about my functional family pets, big enough garden to i can compost everything (i can fill 1 bin in 2 months), solid fuel stove.........hopefully OH's new album will be a ticket to that cottage/barn conversion.0 -
