Nuala - RV= Ratty Virgo. He's had 45 years to get used to me. And to be fair, I cant expect him to do any heavy work. His health isnt the best. But he could do a lot less bloody moaning :D
I am so ratty and knitting fast that there is smoke coming off the needles !:rotfl::rotfl:

Oh Mardatha, I do feel for you. Even though I'm twenty years younger and in the inner city, I am in a similar situation in that I get tired easily and I have no muscle to do the heavy work, and no support. My allotment is going to rack and ruin. I was so jealous the other night because there was a bloke on the site who had taken on one of the better plots. He is doing a fantastic job on it, and was lifting wood for raised beds out of his car. I don't have a car so it's nearly impossible for me to get things onto the plot, and I'm only 4ft 8 so I'm just not strong enough to do the kind of digging that's required. I do have a 'friend' (in inverted commas because I sometimes wonder) who will eventually, grudgingly do some things for me once I have asked him 20 times, but I have given up asking him now because I just can't face it. I would rather struggle alone.

If I was stronger I would come and camp in your garden for a few days and set it up for you but I can't even manage my own bl**dy space (apologies for language).

It's the lack of support as well. I have to do everything on my own and for myself, no-one even to bring me a cup of tea (oh, get the violins out :rotfl:).

Ginnyknit, sorry to hear about your arthritis and your holiday being cancelled.

Sorry for the moan everyone. It's just as well I don't have to live on what I can grow old-style or I'd be famished!

We used to have a saying...that if you were thinking of doing something totally unreasonable or impossible, that you were "smoking your socks".

And now, you are ACTUALLY doing it, with your sock knitting.

As others have said, the main difficulties preventing most of us doing us is a combination of lack of land for growing vegetables/rearing animals and lack of domestic cupboard/storage space. However, I find the whole idea of doing this inspirational, and even if we do things on a very small scale within the limits of our own envionment, we're taking a step in the right direction. And especially when food inflation is set to increase, any non perishable items bought in bulk now before prices start to rise will be as good, if not better than savings in the bank on which interest rates are less than the rate at which inflation is rising.
Every time postage rates have gone up, for example, we've stocked up with a bulk supply in advance of the price increase date, and in practical terms, this has actually saved us money and given us a better financial return than having the same amount of money in a savings account.

Madartha - sorry , didn't realise your husband was not in the best of health - but neither are you I think?
Perhaps the best way to go forward and achieve what you want is to pace yourself. Think - what can I do today - a small piece of the overall plan. Each little bit gets you closer to achieving what you want. Going at it hell for leather and exhausting yourself won't do you any good. Bit by bit - you will get there and each time you succeed will drive you on. After all - what's the rush? The end result is what you want and if that just takes a little longer then so what?

You said you have a son living nearby? B****y well demand he helps you. Children - of whatever age - can be 100% selfish and perhaps he might actually enjoy helping his mother achieve her heartfelt wish.
Sorry if I am speaking out of turn - just tell me to shut up!

Ah, thanks for translating! :D Virgos, aren't they meant to be super-tidy? Although I know a very messy one so perhaps not. It's tricky if he can't do much either. What you need is a team of workers to delegate to. Have visions of you knitting at a fierce pace like a one-woman sock factory!:T Can imagine your face on Time magazine and you being interviewed about how you made your billions from humble sock-knitting roots before Richard Branson bought you out and created Virgin brand handknitted socks.:)

Aw, I've been skim-reading and somehow missed you not going away. Well hope it's all ok now. Stay cosy!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

Yyyy this Virgo is supertidy, as well as Ratty. I thought Ginny said she was off to get togged up in her wellies--- for a second there I thought I wasnt the only one chasing pink sheep round a field with a pair of knitting needles...
