I make peanut brittle, which is addictive, it certainly doesnt last for long. I got a huge bag of sesame seeds from the health food co-op to make some sesame snaps for DGs as they are 30p each for a tiny one in the shops - i just need to get the balance right so they are not too hard for him.

made 2 huge jars of pickles and it took me back to years ago when we used to have 'paupers pickles' with our Sunday dinner. Slices of cucumber and onion rings soaked for a couple of hours in a dish of vinegar. Apparently years gone by they used to have them in the pubs in Manchester - dont know if they had them everywhere else or its peculiar to us?

  • Ginny don't know about being in the pubs, but my dad used to make them when I was a child in Yorkshire - I make them when I remember now - lovely with tuna.

We have always had onion in vinegar with roast beef Sunday dinner, but no one else I know has ever heard of it! I am from Yorkshire, and the side of my family it comes from were quite poor from the North East, so I guess the name paupers pickle works! Never tried the cucumber though.

  • I was brought up in Birmingham and we always had a saucer of cucumber and onion slices in vinegar on the table with Sunday tea.

Hi prepareathome - I do the simple peanut brittle not the one thats got honeycomb toffee in it.

    Peanut brittle

grease a baking tray - I line it with parchment instead

    1/2 a cup of water
    1 1/2 cups salted peanuts
    2 cups of sugar

Mix sugar and water in a deep heavy pan (not one with nonstick coating)
    heat until golden without stirring

Cook for another 5 mins or till amber coloured, take off heat stir in nuts and spread on baking tray, leave as long as you can resist or till cool.

    Remember hot sugar is dangerous.

    sesame brittle

    1 cup sesame seeds
1/4 - 1/2 cup of runny honey. If 1/4 isnt enough just dribble in more till all covered.
Spread on a greased baking tray and bake in a hot oven for about 20 mins or till golden brown - you will be able to smell them cooking - thats when they are usually done!

    Enjoy :)
