Loving this thread, have started to read from the start.
Mardatha I am going to try the yoghurt in the flask soon.
So thank you for that, I am pulling the purse strings as tight as I can as we have some unexpected debt and I want to clear it as soon as I can.
Ginnyknit I am doing the same as you stocking up on basics
.
Well I am going to go back and read some more old posts I get as mush information that I can to help us.Taking it one day at a time0 -
I tried the yoghurt it does make yoghurt. LOL - if that makes sense!
I can remember not long back sugar was 58p
We need the wartime books that tell you how to live without sugar, or else we can ration it0 -
Sorry to hear about your stove problems Mar - ours sometimes does a thing where the number switchy thingy doesn't engage when the stove is roaring - usually clicks back into place though when it cools. Will be heavy on coal though - ours is up to £18 a bag!
I looked at that post about the old range - some folks on the island where we used to live still use them, and I saw one in the stove shop, or something similar, the other day - if I could afford one i'd be really tempted.
it's difficult to know what to do for the best price-wise isn't it? we don't have a choice of shops, and if we drive towards the city have to factor in petrol. I'm looking more towards using less of things like sugar, eating less meat/more cheaper meat etc. Need to get the budget down by spring when my hours go back down - don't want to take on any more paid work, as I feel i lose out as I don't have the time to do money-saving things?
Brill bargain on the felt letters Ginny - would it be worth breaking out some individual alphabets and selling them on??? make your £5 back??

;)Naughty Mardatha I've just been to Amazon now..again :rotfl:
Looks like a great book though I'll lend it to my mum after she might find it a bit less depressing than the last lot I lent her
I've been sorting out my recipes when I've had a bit of spare(!) time recently and have found some really lovely stuff I've never tried before but one of the best I've done recently was a blackberry and apple suet pud from Hugh FW's mums book The Ministry of Food.Even better was the fact the suet was knocked down and all the fruit was free
I'm time poor ATM and trying not to slip on the OS front..so I've been trying to bake and freeze dinners etc when I'm home.
I do really need some time to sit and redo our budget tho as I keep having more month left than money at the mo so somethings wrong somewhere :eek:0 -

are there any ration recipe books still in print? ive been trying to find a decent one for ages, but most of them are modern rewrites that only have wilton pie, mayonnaise and mock cream, so not enough info for a meal plan
would really love to try and get a copy of this

at the moment i tend to use an Elizabeth Craig cookery book from the 1950s, but am trying to find a copy of her 'cooking in wartime book' for less than £30 (without much luck)

I havent really looked flea, cooking isnt my fav thing. I got one book that's terrific and that's the slow cooker recipe one that they were talking about on another thread, Called something like 200 recipes for slow cookers. I love that, its great. Mainly because there's no cooking involved- you just peel it/cslice it/dice it and chuck it in the pot
Here's something to drool over -

WCS can I ask how much coal you use a week? Ours is on 24/7 and currently taking 3 bags a week, ours is £17.50 a bag.
Look under "heat stoves" on that site...I want!
