Thank you for the information on compost heap jelly Stitching Witch. We have an orange each everyday in our packed lunch and I was wondering if there was something more I could do with the peel.

    There might be....

    I just found this today:

    http://happyhomemaker88.com/2009/05/02/recipe-for-homemade-citrus-enzyme-a-natural-cheap-effective-all-purpose-cleaner

So - duly saved it and thought "I'll have a go at that sometime". What I wonder is whether it HAS to be brown sugar - or whether white would do? <wonders if anyone knows enough about chemistry and the like to know whether it matters?>

Oooh, that's interesting - have never heard of that before. Must keep a look out for a suitable bottle to make it in. I don't really have many bottles these days. Maybe a plastic milk bottle - I could get one from someone easily. I would think that the white sugar would do the job just as well Ceridwen - as far as I can tell it just needs the sugar to fuel the fermentation. I was thinking and I would only want to use the peel from unwaxed organic citrus fruit for the jelly but would be happy using any old peel in the cleaner. So I hope to give both a try.

D&DD love the pooch pic, so gorgeous - I still miss having a dog after 10 years.

Thank you all so much guys - instant advice and doesnt sound too difficult either. I thought there might be an simple thing that will help. Mardatha I have just started making OH porridge every morning and it seems to help him so I will give it a go. And thank you Ceridwen for the writers name. Maybe it won't be so daunting now - I have put off doing the research for a while but with you all helping I can start now.

Have a nurse from the Falls clinic coming on tuesday to see OH so cross your fingers that she is of some use to us!

What would I do without you all :)

    Happy New Year, all!

Thanks very much for the links re compost jelly and enzyme cleaner, stitching witch and ceridwen - must give 'em both a go.

If any of you have chickens, then you can use apple cores and peel to make cider vinegar for their water.

    Pay close attention:

Put apple cores and peel in a jar. You really need at least 12, but you can add ithem gradually - you don't need to eat 12 apples in a row.

    Cover with water.

    Put lid on loosely.

    Leave.

Do you want me to put those instructions up again?

It will start to smell quite vinegary after a week or so. Just keep adding more apples/water as appropriate, and pour off what you want to use..

i had a read and found this on her comments hope it helps ..

''Oh, I checked out some sites on making enzymes, they mentioned not to use white sugar but any type of brown sugar, because white sugar is bleached or something. So, I’m glad you haven’t made yours yet, seeing as how I had advised you wrongly last time to try using white sugar. icon_redface.gif?m=1235106192g''

avoiding red or acidic foods can help arthritis. so tomatoes, capsicums, apples and citrus fruits, would be a good starting point for elimination

I've heard that foods from the nightshade family - tomatoes and all peppers are in that group, as are potatoes (but not sweet potatoes) and aubergines. Apparently some sufferers are more severely affected by these foods than others.
