Did anyone else read that they are filming 'real-life Good Life' with Giles Coren and Sue Perkins. I thought it might interest people on this thread. I read about it here

I shall be looking forward to seeing that series when it comes up. Having watched the "historical eating" series by them - they certainly will be "taking the proverbial" and doing a "good exhibition of bad manners" - but I think it might be possible to glean a little bit of useful info. from this nevertheless.0 -

Well my plans hit a hitch because I was tired and OH not well, so we didnt go up to the shops, but I think we go today. Want to get the SS list, that's the baking stuff. Then come home and maybe try yoghurt and/or jam.
After reading the Hannah Hauxwell book I got the dvd (used on amazon) and watched the first part last night. I absolutely loved it and will watch it again today.. the reason I got it was in the book, he says her speech is totally unlike modern day, she is slow spoken and naturally very polite " harking back to a bygone era " so me being nosy, I wanted to hear her. And her accent is very unlike anything I've heard before.
But as a model for self-sufficiency she is not very good. She didnt feed herself well and some days lived on bread & butter and a drink of cows milk or water !!0 -
It's hard isnt it, to start self sufficiency on a very low budget ? The gettign all the ingreds together to start a store - while at the same time living day to day. It has to be a gradual thing but that annoys me I want it all and i want it now !0

I know how you feel! I want an ice cream maker and a fruit drier to make dried friut and fruit leathers. Also more anti - insect netting, more fencing for round the veg plot, more fruit canes, more fruit trees, a second freezer, .........................................................!"The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

you are so right mardatha,it is very hard I've always kept a well stocked store cupboard and this year we were glad of it as first of all we had that ice age Winter that seemed to last forever and we couldn't get to the supermarket when we needed to, plus we were spending more on heating too. Then a couple of months a go I had an unexpected hospital stay, and money normally used on groceries was being spent on petrol visiting meIt's a 4 hour round trip & it cost quite a lot in petrol so I only let my OH visit me twice in the 2 weeks I was in there and then another trip to bring me home again. Thankfully being well stocked up meant that he didn't have to go without anything while I was in there :T but right now I'm like mother hubbard and am dreading the trip to the city for new supplies,I know it's going to cost a fortune that I just don't have  I know I'll get re-stocked eventually a bit a time like I did before, but I feel like my security blanket has gone

Its so true Mardatha, very frustrating as you gather together ingredients or kit to save money. Also you have loads of stuff hanging around waiting to be used. Like recycling, its everywhere! We get points at our Mr T for popping ali cans in a machine in the car park but you have to remember to pick the bu**ers up when you go. But we are in our very definition of O/S doing things by the seasons and as we forage and learn to store - so we are actually really clever, thats the difference.we as a group do not want to join in living in a soceity where the latest handbag or Posh spices new dress rules our lives.
Sorry im preaching to the converted, but am frustrated today as I bought what I thought were oranges for 3 fruit marmalade and I actually bought a load of grapefruit and havent got enough sugar!:(:(:( But as per usual I have just seen a thread for grapefruit curd! Never beaten!Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -

Yes, I agree! great post.

Awh CB, I hope you're fully ok now and will take life easy. It's bad enough here - but where you are the distances are even greater, and petrol costs money. But it is good to have each other in here - so when we have down days or weak weeks we can come on here and get psyched up
My OH is sometimes ok with this and sometimes sneery & my kids all think I'm batty.. but that's not new !

My kids think I'm batty too! I blame it on my dad, we always said he was eccentric and I'm very much like him! :rotfl:
Now we've got chickens, we've been thinking about keeping bees. There's a course near us in the autumn that we're planning on doing before we decide if we will keep bees. If we do decide to do it, then we'll have to start saving for all the kit.
Also, the local college runs a smallholder course which looks really interesting, but it's over £400, so that's another thing to save up for.0
