Just a quick question really. I'm paying rent (part of) for a house of 8 people. The landlord insists that we provide him with one cheque and one cheque only to cover the whole rent for the whole 8 people, and won't accept individual cheques. Interestingly, my landlady the previous year was the opposite. Are there business accts that charge you to pay in cheques? Or any other conceivable reason why he might insist on this?

Just a hunch, and wouldn't want to accuse your landlord of any wrongdoing, but he may be trying to avoid registering it as a HMO (House in Multiple Occupation). He might be thinking that if he paid in one cheque it would look like one family living there, whereas paying in 8 would clearly mean there were 8 separate tenants.
Although yes, pretty much all business bank accounts would charge about 50p a go for paying in cheques. Although if he was concerned about the cost he'd ask you to pay by standing order which is usually free to receive.0
