Last year after a great deal of thinking between a small compact and something bigger I bought a bridge camera - the Canon SX10. It takes good pictures but I am finding I am not taking it out much as I ger fed up carrying it around. So my choices are:
1) Get a small pocket sized camera (as well as keeping the SX10) which I would carry round most of the time. Budget £100 max but will I be happy with the quality of the pics.
2) Get a new mobile phone with a better camera so I am not carrying around two bits of gear. But can I get one for under £100 which woud take as good a shot as a camera for the same budget.
3) Sell my SX10 on Ebay where I will get £185'ish and spend all of that and even more on a better quality pocket sized camera. But will I miss it particularly will I miss the viewfinder***.
*** A friend up country has bought a Panasonic TZ10 and he says in sun the viewfinder is near impossible to use and it cost him £300 plus.

Here you go.. for 99.99 - a good camera from a good brand with an optical viewfinder:
Canon Ixus 95 IS - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-IXUS-95-Camera/dp/B001T9NH5G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1278664297&sr=8-1
Look at the tiny, rubbish lens on a phone camera. It just can't compete with a 'real' camera. It might be all good in the bright sunshine, but take it anywhere without lots of light and it will fail badly. Not to mention the lack of a decent flash.
I have a 7 year old Canon Ixus (5mp).. it still takes great photos
Blimey, just looked at the SX10 and it costs more than my Panasonic SLR! You should be able to get about 200 quid for it on ebay I'd think. My bridge camera sits in a cupboard doing nothing now, yet I use my SLR and compact quite a lot. Bridge cameras are a poor purchase in my opinion.0 -
Are you embarrassed using it in public then ? Go out more with it. Look here for the world wide photowalk. http://worldwidephotowalk.com/0

Where do you get the "embarrrassed using it in public" from???
Checked the link but nothing returned for my area but living in Totnes in South Devon means I am not short of good photo spots but that wasn't really my reason for posting.0 -
Thanks Ringo I paid £240 this time last year so £200'ish is a good price considering I have used for this period. I had owned a film SLR and latterly a DLSR but chose the bridge camera for a multitude of reasons. I guess even us men can change our minds:eek:
Yes beginning to realise that a mobile phone will be poor choice. I went into a couple of mobile phone shops today and found some staff very very unhelpful but one very very helpful and he said the same. He owned several cameras including Canon DSLR and a Canon Ixus. When he goes out he picks up whichever he felt in the mood to use.0 -
If you want compact and good, why not go for something like the Panasonic LX3 or the Canon G10 (or G11)?

Hi again Ringo
Two good cameras. I looked closely at the G10 when I bought the SX10 but it was £160 more. My original budget was £200 which I went over by £40.
But I have decided to keep my SX190 and buy something for my pocket with a £140 budget. NO mobile phones though!!!0
