Thanks imaginary number, I am sure I will be able to secure any data with the utilities on the ultimate boot cd for windows and tbh with all the !!!! on it, it may well need a full reinstall anyway.
It's easier to get forgiveness than to ask permission ;)

    You are probably right.

Don't forget to back up the whole of the user doc'n'settings (eg local settings) just incase you need something later.

In the meantime you could also download sp3 and burn it to disc in readiness for the reinstall.

Finally, my own person preference for free AV is avast. Todate i have never had to repair a machine where it had screwed up the O/S. Norton and Mcafee are the worst for this, to be fair AVG has only done it once or twice.

    Good luck
  • ah, the wonders of making a back-up... or not as it may seem!

No, we don't. It was just a cover to add the paid for software to the post.

I still would not take this kind of advice from a 2 time poster on an open forum. Whether this poster is legit or not, it is asking for grief to take advice from such a poster.

I appreciate your caution. I would recommend that one should always google the software regardless of who it is from.

Ok pass me the humble pie...

I have just looked at his only other post and have to concede that although he recommends free programs he then suggests that they might be too difficult for most users, before recommending the paid for program...

At least he is a balanced spammer :embarasse

    My bad

    • So you lost your Windows XP user password? You can try your best to remember XP account password, such as: your name? a loved one's birthday? something from your childhood? a pet's name?your home or office address?

The last post before yours was in July 2010. I imagine they have managed to sort it by now. ;) By the way, you should remove the link from your profile, as posting links in signatures is prohibited without clearance from the site team.
    Best Regards
