What happens when she presses the shift + 3 keys on her machine then?

Is it PC or Laptop, if PC what keyboard she is using, if laptop which laptop?

sounds like her keyboard is set to a non-uk language (e.g., US) or she is using a non-UK keyboard.

Usually it's caused by an install of windows prior to Vista, etc. when people just accept the default US settings without realising (this switches the @ and " buttons around, and US keyboards don't have a £ option)

Look in the Control Panel for regional and language options, and set UK as default

Yes - that's how a US keyboard behaves. She just needs to change it to UK keyboard settings.

God, I hate people who ask for advice then don't want to follow your instructions. I know a lot of people like your friend! :)
