returning to UK

I am leaving my husband after he had an affair and returning to the UK from the US. I have very little savings, pretty much just enough to get the flights home, I don't have any home in the UK, I just needed to know about benefits, I will stay with my Mum when I get home with my 2 small children, Does anything I claim affect her pension etc as she is on her own. Could I claim benefits without a regular address as I will not be able to stay with my mum for long. My husband will only pay a small amount of maintenance as he is a student and has no money either. It is all such a mess, we came to the US to fulfill our dreams and now he has ruined everything.
Thank you for any help.

Unlikely that you will affect her pension - however - if you are thinking out claiming benefits you will have to prove that you are habitually resident. Be prepared for the fact that you may wait a few months before being entitled to anything.
  • Thanks for responding, would the delay be because I have been out of the country? or because I have no permanent address? I have only been out of the country for 6 months if that makes a difference

The delay would have been because you were out of the country, the address is a minor and usually insignificant problem, but if you were only away six months it might not be so much of a problem.

I can't answer your questions but wish you the best of luck and quick healing for your broken heart. I hope you can quickly establish contact with your friends and relatives and establish a good social network to take your mind of things and get you settled back into the UK.
