Out of date baby milk - help

I bought a small carton of babymilk in superdrug today and when I got it home I looked at the sell-by date and it was 3 July 2006!!!! I'm pretty disgusted really, I suppose it's a good job I checked and didn't just give it to DS, but should I just take it back to the shop and be treated like a common criminal and grudgingly be given my money back at best (I've had prior dealings with superdrug staff) or is there anything else I can do, like e-mail their customer services or something. Would you even bother? Any advice? Thanks in anticipation.

Jxx

PS: Hope this is the right place to put this - I'm easily confused
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

  • I would go higher than the superdug store you got it from, I would go to their head office after all this is baby milk and with babies sensitive tummies who knows what it could have done to your baby. If no joy with them I'd suggest going to trading standards.

I would contact your local environmental health, and give them all the details, they will/should be helpful.
    And contact Superdrug's head office.
    Hope this helps

Was it best before or use by on the date, if it was best before i wouldnt have though it would have hurt the little one, but they should be checking there stock more regually thats for sure.
  • Now you have given it back and accepted a refund you will get no help from anyone. EHO needs to have the goods - he would have obtained refund for you. Head office - forget it!

If you read the OP, you will see that she hasn't taken it back and accepted a refund. She was asking if this is what she should do.

I haven't taken it back yet - it was today and I didn't realise until I got it home. I know what superdrug usually do with the cartons that have only got say two months left on the sell by date is reduce the price - I've bought some of them before. Perhaps I'll give environmental health a ring tomorrow.

  • I bought some baby food from Boots over 3 months past its best before date and as you can imagine I was really angry and upset.

I spoke to store manager but wasnt satisfied and reported it to Trading Standards. They visited me at home inspected jars took product codes and details off receipt etc etc. They liased with Heinz (who told me food should be okay 4-6 weeks after best before date but NO WAY any longer than that) Anyway outcome was that Boots got a telling off and reminder about proceedures etc such as to rotate stock and certainly not to stick price labels over best before dates! Never heard anyhting from Boots for months. I contacted Boots Head Office, got a standard letter and £25 gift card. Wasnt too chuffed with Boots about the whole thing but didnt have the energy to take it any further as was quite upset that I coulve given my daughter out of date meet products. Trading Standards were quite helpfull though.

THEN a few weeks later I bought some cow and gate fruitpura from Superdrug 3 weeks past best before date. SA was very apologetic but Manager was absolutely useless and just stood there!! They replaced the out of date food and didnt even offer me a refund! I was soooo annoyed but my daughter decided to start screaming so didnt bother arguing that one out. The assistant did immediately rush to remove the stock from the shelves though. Should have written to Head Office but just didnt have the time.

My advice would be to go straight to Trading Standards. Your local store shouldnt be able to get away with keeping this quiet and a visit from Trading Standards might shake them up a bit and ensure that things are done properly.

What if another parent bought the product and didnt check the dates as you and I did, a baby could become quite ill, after all best before and use by dates are there for a reason.

Hope this helps. Good Luck with what you decide to do and let us know the outcome. You must be quite shaken about this I know I was when I thought I could have made my little one ill.
  • I bought some baby soup from Boots which was four months out of date!!

I went back to the store and wasn't even offered a refund so I contacted Head Office and got sent out a £15 gift card and five pounds from Heinz whose soup it was I bought.

Even though food items do not self destruct on their Best Before / Expiry date you should have a choice whether you choose to give it to your child and not buy it and discover it is out of date afterwards.

Complain to Head Office and tell them how upset you are also contact the manufacturers to let them know what has happened.

  • BarginhunterII well done for reporting them and getting in touch with Boots again after that length of time.

Superdrug I think can be !!!!!!s when it comes to customer service. A few months ago my daughter got burned (just a tiny burn) and I went into the pharmacy to get some cream and I got sold a cream which made it much worse. We had to go to the doctor and I was told I got sold a cream which aided the burn! I went back into the store and they just didn't care. I was basically told that everyone makes mistakes and I should take more care before I use anything on a burn! I was fuming and wish I had complained further as it was their advice I had followed in the first place.
Wish I knew my rights then and had followed it up.
