Second Degree _ NHS Funding?

I'm thinking of doing a second degree, a dentistry one.

But I don't know about funding a second undergraduate degree, can someone please advice? Even with a Career loan from barclays I'm gonna fall far short of what I'll probably need.

So where else can I get funding from? I've heard the NHS may be able to help.

  • Has anyone else got any helpful suggestions?

I've just emailed the NHS and am waiting on a reply.

you will be eligible for a student loan, but no fees help. You get the DH bursary and fees paid in your final year of a 5 year course or in years 2-4 on the dentisrty GEP courses...

You will probably have to get a part time job too - that's what I and my other grad medic friends have had to do...

  • If you go for dental therapy (3 yrs) or hygiene, you get the full bursary each year.

I am not even going to comment, Fluffy is way more knowledgable than me (I've seen her give very good advice on all the med/student boards I read!)
  • Dentistry is one of the few second degrees you can now get a maintenance loan for. However, you will be liable for top-up fees and you will not be eligible for a fee loan, so you will need to find £3000 to pay each year. The NHS funded part of your course should not be affected by previous study.

I would not advise a career development loan as these become repayable after 2 years, so are best saved until you are near the end of your course.

It would be worth thinking about whether or not you actually want to do this as the fees are going to be very expensive.
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

As a medic or dentalist, you can defer professional studies/career development loans until 3-6 months (depending on bank) after your graduation date...

And most universities roll out their bursary packages to graduates too - I know we do. A few grads in the first year at my med school are paying LESS in fees than I am under the old 'regime'...
