Alliance and Leicester Worldwide Cover

I am considering changing my bank account to the Premier 50 Current Account which comes with Worldwide Travel Insurance cover up to the age 79. Although they say it is free with the account, the account charge is £10/mth.
I have checked out their cover on defaqto and they say it is 4 star rating, which is better than the Post Office (3 star rating). The policy is underwritten by Fortis.
Has anybody any first hand experience of this Insurance cover ?

Have had an A&L "Premier" account since day one, this included free world wide travel insurance
however after a number of years they changed this to European cover only
pretty certain that Fortis has only taken over this for the last few years, don't think we claimed under Fortis
however can't remember when we claimed, but when we did it was fairly hassle free, and straight forward
have not herd about the £10 a month charge, I thought it was part of the "carrot" to attract people (aged 50+) to the account0 -
I changed my account to Premier 50 because the £10 per month [£120] P.A. was cosiderably cheaper than buying annual w/wide cover for my wife and I. I rang Fortis before I changed my account and their t&c are exactly the same as if you are buying travel ins. the travel ins.comes with a 28 day limit, but this can be extended [with a one off payment last year this cost £22.80] to 60 days [max]. We are both reasonably fit and in our middle 70s and as yet have not had to claim, but when you see how much the travel insurers charge for people of our age this is a bargain.0

Totally agree, over 65 it is considerably cheaper, under 65 there are better deals elsewhere.
My only concern is that you only know how good your Insurance is, when you have to make a claim.
Anyone made a claim on this policy during the Vocanic Ash problems ?0 -
We've had it for a couple of years, we had to pay extra for worldwide, and also extra for our child, so it was drifting into 'not really worth it' territory.Out on blue six..
It's Chips and Jackets, Peas and Trousers.0 -

You are not talking the same Insurance, If you had to upgrade to Worldwide you have a Premeir Direct Account. That was covered by AXA which is useless.0 -
It is time to re-evaluate your Travel Insurance in the wake of the Ash Cloud saga. I thought Fortis was Good but after talking to them, changed my opinion.
They will no longer cover anything to do with Volcanic Ash or Airline Failure.
Better deals elsewhere with less customer risk.0 -
Will the same benefits be given when Santander takes over the Alliance and Leicester Premier 50 account?0

Probably - they seem to be changing very little about A&L accounts apart from the sort codes
But don't count on it for ever. I am sure existing policies will continue until the renewal date if they do mess with it.0
