Cutting NTL telephone LANDLINE call charges - your experiences?

I am getting an NTL phone line installed - it is the better option for me, as I would have to pay for BT to be installed. Additionally the "free" TV channels are the only ones that I want.
There is no need for Internet either at the moment.
The free phone/TV suits me fine.
I even remembered to have someone "refer" me to NTL - £50:D nicely since it was my mum who referred me. :rotfl:
[I even managed to haggle her £70 saving over the next 6 months thanks to MSE guidance - thanks everyone!:A ]
Any way, after much trawling of the home phones section, I am looking to cut the cost of landline calls via NTL.
(I never phone mobiles - free minutes elsewhere for that).
The weekends are sorted (free calls included in the basic package).
There is a 6p connection charge here - hang up after an hour.
Now for the daytime and evenings, the best I have found so far is 0844 calls which offers 1p/min to UK landlines at all times.
For all of these calls there is a 6p connection charge.
There are several others that offer pretty much the same rate, so I will not mention them all (check out the UK call checker)
My question is...can this be be beaten on an NTL line?
On BT you can get it down to 0p/min + connection charge.
Is there an equivalent for NTL or dropping that 1p charge even further during daytime and evenings???
I even managed to check that the 0845/0844 access numbers are charged at the advertised rates using NTL price tariffs as this is often where the advertised rates might differ: http://www.ntl.com/home/telephone/tariff.asp
(you download 2 files, the NGN guide and the Tarrif guide).

I recommend either THE PHONE CO-OP or FIRST TELECOM.
With The Phone Co-Op's Home User tariff, all evening and weekend calls are fixed at 4.7p for the call, no other connection fee.
The Phone Co-Op is also excellent for reliable 0844/0871 access - you avoid NTL's evil connection fee and get the same per minute rate as BT customers.
With First Telecom's Cable Saver tariff, there is a low minimum call charge of just 1.2p per call.
For various international destinations, I recommend TOPUPNOW at 5p connection and 0p/min
