Help with special meals on planes

  • If you are wondering why I fly veggie still, take a tip from a frequent flyer - always request a special meal flying long haul. Not only do you get a meal that has been prepared for a vastly smaller number of people than the normal meals, but more importantly the special meals are normally distributed first so you get fed before the other 300 people in economy. And you don't have to fly veggie, just request a special meal - kosher, halal, vegan, low salt, low fat etc.

I would rush to do this! You've more chance of an upgrade if you haven't requested a special meal.

OK, so normal chances are slim, but if you're a frequent flyer, on business, travelling alone with no special requirements then the chances are greatly increased.

Sorry to say that unless the rules change you are not allowed to carry any of your own food on flights at the moment.

We flew to America late august and were aloowed to take food as long as it was sealed packs and no liquid.

We need gluten free meals. i always pack quite a lot of food, as you can never guaruntee you will get it - although 90% of the time you do. Often the main meal is provide , but no snacks.

We pack cereal bars, rice cakes etc.

I'm on a medical diet and I have to weigh all of my food and eat at strict times. Usually I'd travel with a couple of containers with veggies/salad and meat or cheese. I wonder what I can do now?

Not my experience at all. I get complimentary upgrades on around 50% of my long haul flights.

Fill us all in on how to do it then! I travel long haul several times a year and have never been upgraded, and no, I don't look like a tramp! :rotfl:

  • I always ask for kosher meals on my flights and I've has them even when I've been upgraded.

There are no tricks to being upgraded - just join the frequent flyer club and then fly loads!!! It's just a loyalty reward:confused:

If you ask then 9.5/10 you will be refused. Even if you dress smartly , it's not a guarantee. Best bet is to pick flights that will be oversubscribed - London to NY with United at about 11.00am is always a good one - lol.

Not any more, they are withdrawing from the route and Delta are starting JFK-LGW, hence the £160 offer.
