Reclaiming Tax

Just finished my placement last week and I am trying to reclaim some of my tax back, as from April 2006 - September 2006 I was taxed on the basis that I would be working for the full tax year. However as I finished in September I reckon I should be eligible to claim some of my tax back.

I've heard different things of a couple of people regarding this. One has said that I can put a claim in now stating I will not be working for the rest of this tax year and I should get it all back. Another has said that they will only pay you a bit at a time unless you wait till the end of the tax year where you can reclaim it all back at once.

Has anyone done this before and when can I claim?

Cheers.

not sure but think you may have to wait until April (end of the tax year) to claim back!

You are right that you can claim the tax back if you declare you will have no further earnings this year.

Otherwise you have to wait until the end of the tax year.

Thanks! I'm a little bit confused now. A lad I know told me I needed a p50 (Claiming back tax when you have stopped working). Which form do I need, is it the p50 or r40?

i've used the p50 to get tax back that i paid in july - has proved complicated for other reasons but the HMRC told me that was the one to use!

I couldn't get the P50 to come up on the hmrc website when I first looked but typically it does now. I thought maybe it was defunct or only for later in the year but it can be found here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/p50.pdf
  • i claimed mine back no problem - just get on the inland revenue site and get a p50 (print the bad boy off) and send it to the local inland revenue office which deals with your old employer. You will also need to include the appropriate parts of your P45 for them to see. (be sure to keep the one bit of it they state you should keep) - i got a cheque about a month later. all nice and shiney and lovely. good luck! :) xxx
  • because my employers for the last few years havnt been notifing the gov about my wotrk or pay they wont give me any of the money they owe me back. nearly 300 pounds! thieving so and sos!
