i am thinking of changing supplier to try and save some money. i am just curious as to how they work it.....as we pay by monthly dd we are at certain times of the year in credit and others in debit.......how does this work when changing? if you are in debit do you have to pay off the bill once switched? if you are in credit do they pay this back immediately?

Yes you are basically correct.
During the switching process you will give the meter readings to your new supplier who passes them on to your old one.
From these readings they work out the final bill and as you say if there is a credit they will refund it to you (can take a while) or if a debit they will expect you to pay it, either by the DD if in place or by other means if not.0
