Self-removals i.e. hiring a van ADVICE

Hi there
Bit of a loss for advice here. Have moved before from one city to another (I'm a flatsharer so don't have lots of furniture)
However, am appaled at the cost of one way van hire these days- about £150 on top of normal hire.
Can anyone recommend a better (cheaper) way of doing this? Am relocating from Brighton to Leicester (150 miles approx)
Is it just as cheap to hire removalists?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

If it's £150 more, it would be cheaper to go by train the day before and hire a van in Leicester and drive it back.0

It is generally reckoned a car costs 40p per mile to run, this is a van so say 50p per mile over 150 miles = £75, plus one way ticket Leicester to Brighton, plus driver's wage over 6/7 hours (2 way journey), £150 doesn't seem excessive. PasturesNew's idea is good, may be even cheaper if you can go by coach. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

If you don't have too much stuff - try an estate car rather than a Van. You should be able to get a one-way hire somewhat cheaper via National/Europcar. We hired a car at Christmas/New Year last year, and the 1-way fee between Darlington and London was no different to the same-drop-off point fee.
Can you get by with a car?0 -
Take it back to where you rented from, also if you are doing a one way you are probably looking at a large chain company, a weekend hire for a small firm is probably about £60. If you don't have much stuff you can probably do it in a day if you're organised. Then just get a train back
