Lost engagement ring

I purchased a diamond engagement ring from an online retailer at an attractive price. However, after a few months the diamond became loose in its setting.

I called the company up who said to post it back and they would fix it. I posted it back via Royal Mail Track and Trace and Royal Mail has lost it.

Royal Mail wont provide compensation above a book of stamps because they say it should have been sent via Special Delivery not Track and Trace
My credit card company won’t help me
My home insurance won’t pay out as it was out of my care
I’ve contact the company and they are offering to replace the ring at cost price

I’m all out of ideas and feel like I’ve been royally screwed over. Any advice?

    You've not been screwed over.

Unfortunately you failed to check that your item was suitably insured when sending it in the post. Recorded delivery will cover you for £41, so I would try and claim this from them. There's really nothing you can do about the rest of the money I'm afraid, so you might have to put it down to experience.

How much was the ring worth?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Enough to be absolutely gutted, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it looks like nobody can help me and I'm going to have to "put it down to experience"!

How long has it been since you posted it and what is the tracking number showing? That it is still in their network being processed?

It was posted on May 29th and, yes, it still says it is being processed for delivery.

I have filled in the relevant forms and received a reply from Royal Mail saying I'm not eligible for compensation. I understand that it may still turn up, however, the wedding is in a matter of months so I don't know how long to hold on for before getting a replacement.

track and trace isnt a service
its either recorded or special delivery
you must have used Recorded delivery
didnt the post office or you enquire about the value when you posted the item?

Ah so not just a matter of days then.

Didnt they ask you at the post office if you were sending anything of value? They usually ask me at my local PO.

If you're not clued up or used to sending things through the post, it can be rather impossible to know about all the different services offered.

Well on the bright side, can get a better ring this time and if the other one turns up, you can either sell it or keep it and have 2 rings?

If you want you can PM me the tracking number and I can get it checked on the internall system which sometimes gives more detail than the RM website one.
