I have just discovered that the forum requires me to wait 30 seconds between posts. Do I really type so fast it's mistaken me for a machine?!

I've been making ' proper ' chicken sandwiches recently, whilst i've been buying my reduced chickens. Tastes so much better than plastic slices out of a plastic pack, labelled as chicken, ( which i never buy ).

    Yum

Yes, that's one way I really enjoy chicken: roast, sliced in sandwiches with salt on! We had casserole tonight and I preferred the bits of roast I snitched while cooking to the finished product! :D

"Egocentricity (is there such a word?) is at the root of the love of money." Discuss.

    Yes Miss

Egocentrictity means confusing what we see and think with reality. Therefore it cannot be at the root of the love of money, by definition.

Sorry, i don't have a thousand words. Why waste a thousand words? :p

Ah, we were working to different definitions - I defined egocentricity as being self-centred and from that point of view, a love of money I think could be argued to be egocentric - whether it's saved or spent, it's about serving self not others. By your definition, though, it can't possibly be connected. Does that mean we're both right? ;)

I would suggest there is only one god. I'm not sure if concepts of god differ between cultures, or if this is subject to mans interpretation. Take the koran for instance. , ( i'm not singling out one group, its the only example i can think of at the moment). I saw a very interesting programme on tv, some time ago.I don't know too much about the koran and i don't know to what extent this is propaganda, ( by humans ), But the koran has several interprations / transcriptions, and has significantly changed from its original arabic? ( i think ), translation. Have other works of religion changed too? I'm sure there are lots of ways in which god never intended us to live our lives. Nor do i think you have to go to church, mosque, whatever, to what effect?

I think different religions see God differently - I understand Hinduism can be either monotheistic or polytheistic for instance whereas monotheism is a central belief of Judaism.

People have questionned whether Judeo-Christian scriptures have changed over the years: the idea once was that they probably had because for so long they were hand-written. However, the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls which were written and hidden from something like 170 BC to 50 AD shows that significant chunks of the Old Testament remain the same (there are a couple of places apparently where the text differs - Wikipedia says this is because the text wasn't finalised unitl about 100 AD). Of course people vary in how they interpret the Bible and different countries have different approaches because of their history. For instance England has the Church of England because of Henry the Eighth - but we also have Catholicism because before Henry's time it was a Catholic country and there is still a big influence from Ireland and other Catholic Countries. Not just those two, of course - the UK is very influenced by other Protestant traditions from Europe, and Methodism which is essentially a spin-off from the C of E. So all these different groups, while based around the same set of beliefs, have their own traditions and differences. So who has the right view of God? I think we are going to have to wait and see! So interpretations differ and evolve thoguh the book remains much the same.

Regarding going to church. mosque, etc - I can't speak for Islam but I do believe Christianity was intended to be lived out in community. (I don't understand where the Desert Fathers got their isolation from. How are you supposed to love your neighbour if you are shut away from him or her?) So although you can believe in God without going to church, church is the ideal forum to learn more about him and also to begin to put his teachings into practice. So for me it's important - it's not necessary for salvation but a key factor in progressing in my faith. Besides, I don't do very well on my own - I need the encouragement of other people who believe the same as me and help me think things through or live them out.

I like to think i'm a kind hearted, giving, generous, human being, and to me, thats what comes from within a person. You don't have to follow the writings of someone else, go to church, a mosque, pray several times a day, to be this person. So what is religion. Discuss?

Absolutely. There are many good people who do good things just because that's who they are. They aren't necessarily religious, though religious belief can influence some people to do more than they otherwise might.

I think this argument needs to be turned round - it isn't being good, kind, etc. that leads to being accepted by God. If God is perfect, we all fall short of that standard, but if for those who want to follow him his teachings should inform our actions and attitudes. If those things are missing, the person's faith could be called into question because it would appear not to affect their lives.

So what is religion? There should be evidence of changed lives, yes, but that's the out-working of something that's going on, on the inside, allowing God to make us into the people he intended us to be - through prayer, fellowship, study, caring for others etc. It's about relationship with him, getting to know him more, allowing him to know us. If it's just about rituals, what difference do they make? They have no power to change lives.

I've lost the comment about going to a religious school, but you are right. I never ' got ' it. I've never managed to find this elusiveness of faith, so maybe i should just accept my, ( what god would say ), failings, in that respect, too. However, going back to my old school, a few years ago, gave such a feeling of calm, i've never experienced, before. I could have stayed in the old school chapel, for the rest of my life, and never torn myself away. However, god still did'nt magically appear. I question his existence?

I'm not sure what you're looking for?

I don't find faith comes easily - it would be a great deal easier if God were visible, but then it wouldn't be faith. I think he likes us to care enough to go looking rather than imposing himself on us.

I had that feeling of calm too, once. Strangely, it wasn't in a church but in a room that a religious man had been staying in for a few weeks immediately before I went in. Before he stayed there it was just an ordinary room and after he left there was a great feeling of calm which gradually faded over the next however long. Very strange.

A fairly uneventful day, apart from a call from work which could mean trouble, though I've no idea what they want to speak to me about. I'll find out tomorrow.

Other than that - lentil soup for my tea, plenty extra to freeze, and the others finished up bits and pieces that needed finishing. Not too much spent - a few cleaning things, fruit and vegetables, that sort of thing.

The sort if blustery day that dries the washing in half an hour and soaks it again in ten minutes. I resorted to the tumble drier to finish the sheets so I could be sure of them being dry tonight and not have to use the ones I don't like as much.

If I'm quiet for a couple of days again, I'm back on nights.

Thanks Chev, it wasn't too bad at all.

I have since turned over the compost bin, evicted some spuds that had taken root and gleaned a pound and a half of beautiful new potatoes. For some reason the kids will not get to hear about this...:D:D:D

The freezer was making progress, thanks, but I've since put in 5 tubs of soup so we're almost back to square one.

I'm now having a roast chicken sandwich in honour of Ani. :)

I'm not supposed to be posting now, I'm supposed to be at work but I had to call in sick. I made the mistake of thinking I could cope last night though I wasn't feeling 100% during the afternoon, but once I got into work I went downhill - nearly started ringing round in the early hours for someone to take over the shift, even if I was in no state to get myself home. However, I got through and have promised myself - never again! Even a 24 hour bug can be vicious, and no, there aren't any gory details, I just felt too bad to move. Good job I had some painkillers with me, that helped me feel human long enough to get the essentials done.

I'm the best part of better now and getting bored of dry bread and hot water - last night I couldn't even watch an advert for sausages and it's surprising how many of those there are overnight when you don't want them!

Here's to a better day tomorrow. :) I suppose it's one way of making savings on food, though. ;)

As I am fond of lists, here is a little one to prove I do not have too many cleaning products:

    Undersink cupboard:
    Rinse aid
    pet disinfectant x 3
    stain remover for whites
    plughole unblocker *
    soda crystals
    de-icer
    wool-washing liquid
    bleach
    carpet shampoo for Vax
    spray carpet shampoo
    floor polish *
    disinfectant
    white vinegar
    fairy liquid x 2
    multi-surface cleaner
    mould and mildew remover
    wood cleaner
    anti-bacterial spray
black or blue bin liners x 5
    fabric conditioner
window cleaner (Don't worry his wife says he can stay there)
    dishwasher tablets x 2

    Elsewhere in kitchen:
    Biological washing powder
    Non-bio washing powder
    dishwasher salt
    meths x 2
    white spirit
    Biotex *
    insecticide *
    compost activator *
    plant food x 2
    pet shampoo

    Bathroom:
    Bleach
    Toilet duck
    bathroom cleaner
    bathroom wipes
    shower spray
    anti-bacterial cleaner
    limescale remover

    In drawers in dining room:
    metal polish
    silver polish
    oust x 2
    wood polish x 2
    wax polish for special surface
    cleaning cloths
    ceramic hob cleaner
    wood filler
    spare pegs
    Vax bags
    hot iron cleaner
    descaler x 2
    scourers
    sponges
net bags for washing small items
    cable clips
    tea towels
    dish cloths
    sponge scourers
    stain removal sticks x 2
    window insulation film
    gloves
    Eucalyptus oil
    Lavender oil
    oi dropper
    clothes brush
    colour run remover
    clothes refresher spray *
    stain remover sachets
    stain devils all purpose
assorted shoe cleaners which I haven't investigated.

Those marked with a star (*) are pretty ancient but I can't find sell-by dates.

At least they are all out in the day light now and their little hideaways are cleaned out. Most have even gone back home.

I am now hoping to get the multiples used up though what happens is usually that in my new-found awareness I keep an eye open for bargains (in this case cleaning bargains) and end up buying even more, though the budget may put the brakes on that. It's not a happy bunny this week becaus I took £10 off it to save towards things that cost £5 or more and don't get bought that often. And I will again, ha!

And on a related note: still plenty of soup in the freezer and I am down 2lbs on a couple of days ago which is a good thing. :)

Glad the bug was short lived Miggy.

Laughed at the short list of cleaning products, I blame having too many cupboards and draws to fill up :D

Why did our parents always have salt on the chicken, in sandwiches?
A habit i've followed through to the present day. A chicken sandwich is'nt a chicken sandwich, without salt. It just does'nt taste the same. :rotfl::rotfl:
