Extracting information from itunes back ups

I have recently been having problems backing up my Iphone since installing OS 4.0.
After a lengthy discussion with Apple care it seems that there was only one iPhone backup file in the directory of my pc. This backup file had somehow interfered with the iPhone’s ability to back up at all when the phone was connected to the pc.
After moving the backup file from the itunes folder I now have the ability to back up effectively and all is well. But is there anyway that I can extract contacts and any other info from the back up file at all?
