Moving Home

Hi all, we are in the process of moving (should be in new house in 6-8 weeks), i was wondering, are the gas & electric carried over to the new house, or do i cancel them & start afresh?

Just wondering as we are going from a 3 bed flat with combi boiler to a 3 bed semi with back boiler, obv they will be totally different.

If they just get carried over, can i switch at any time if i find eon (who we are with at the minute) not as cheap as others? Or will there be a fee? I switched to them beginning of last year.

Thanks very much.

    Hi mantamark,

Do you know who supplies the new property?

If the new property is also supplied by us you can take the current tariff your on with you to the new address.

If then you do decide to change supplier from E.ON there maybe a charge but this will depend on the terms and conditions of the tariff you choose or have (if you take the tariff with you).

Most importantly remember to take meter readings for both addresses when you move out of one and move in to the other. This will ensure billing is accurate during the switch.

You have to cancel the contracts and start afresh. This may be subject to any minimum term in your current contracts, eg the supplier might require you to take out a new contract at your new address or pay an early termination fee.

I dont know who supplies them, but i will find out.

Obv the price of heating / powering a 3 bed semi is different from a 3 bed flat, so it would need to be adjusted, but how do we know how much to adjust it by, without living there?

    Its all very complicated!

I will find out their supplier, is it cheeky to ask them how much they use / pay?
  • Hi, If your new property is not supplied by Eon and you want it to be then Eon will advise you of what you need to do and also whether you can protct your current Tariff.
Brian may be able to advise whether if you cchange the supply at the new house immediatley if you can carry ovver your new tariff.
You are entiltiled to ask the current owner who there gas and electric supplier is, this is normally covered by your solicitor. I think it is always wise to ask them how much they pay and I would have asked for copies of their bills before I agreed to purchase.
If you can get this information then you will be able to calculate how much they used and then go to a comparasion site to look for the best deal. This is always by using DD and on line.
Just for the record ask them when was the central heating last serviced it,is it guaranteed etc.
Good luck and I hope this helps

Thanks for the help, didnt think of asking them for it, i thought it was a bit cheeky asking how much they paid & how much they used, will give them a ring today.

Central heating is an old back boiler system, we are looking at getting it changed to a new condensing boiler in the near future.

    Thanks for the help.

  • I currently live in a rented property and we get our gas and electricity from e.on. We're due to move out at the end of July into our own flat (not sure who the suppliers there are).

How much notice can we give e.on of moving? Could I take the final meter readings next week and then get an estimate to the end of July, pay this total amount, and close the account?

    Hi moneysavingnovice

Brian's not around for the next few days, so thought I would just jump on to this thread.

It's always best to tell us the meter readings on the day you give up responsibility for the property. This will make sure the final bill is accurate.

If this isn't possible, tell us you are moving out about five days before the actual move. We will start the procedure to close the account and finalise to the date you advise responsibility changes.

Where we don't have actual readings, we will estimate the closing readings and bill to these. You can pay this if you wish.

Hope this is useful moneysavingnovice. Give me a shout if you need any more info or drop an email to the address in my Profile; will be happy to help.

    Hi Malc,

    Thanks for you reply.

I hope you don't mind me picking your brain some more:

I'm moving out of my rented property in a few weeks time, into my own 1-bed flat. The gas and electricity supplier in my rented flat is e.on, and I'm trying to decide whether to stay with them when I move.

I've tried a few of the price comparison websites but I don't really understand the results!

My last bill from e.on shows that:
    13Mar-17Jun I used 520 kWh of electricity and;
    31Mar-07Jun I used 2,500 kWh of gas.

I'm assuming my consumption will be similar when I move (same size property/age of property/number of adults etc).

Is there any way you can help me find out the most competitive e.on tariff I could be with once I move? I'm currently on e.on energyplan.

Many many thanks for any help you can give!

    Hi moneysavingnovice

I'm really sorry for the delay in replying. I have been out of the office quite a bit recently.

Energy Plan is our standard tariff. There are certainly savings to be made either on some of our other tariffs or with another supplier.

We offer extra discounts for paying by Direct Debit and managing your account online. There are also other tariffs if you prefer not to do these things.

Some tariffs have cancellation fees, though, and you need to be aware of these.

You're already doing the right thing in checking out the comparison sites. These will list out all the options available, both with us and the other suppliers.

Either call us or give me a shout if you are struggling working out your usage. Will be happy to let you know what you've been using at your current home.

As I posted above, there is an email address in my Profile if you would like me to take a look for you. Would be happy to do so. :)
