Could you not agree to split the difference and pay an extra £50? I think thats the route i'd try.

This should all have been discussed before the start, the fitter should have made it clear what he was quoting to be fitted, and you should have made clear what was being fitted.

When the fitter discovered the product wasn't what He expected He should have informed you of the increased costs during the phone call and you should have confirmed the original estimate stood.

It's a misunderstanding, the fitter isn't trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

Also did He provide you with an Estimate or a Quote, legel definition is different although difficult to enforce, an estimate is exactly that...an estimate of cost, a quote is a fixed price fit. What does it state on his paperwork?

I wouldnt pay him the extra, call himself a carpenter. You did askhim to fit real wood flooring, most of the time this is glued or fitted using the hidden pin method......he shouldnt be asking for extra at all. Anyway £540 is a lot, i presume you had a lot to do (inc skirting)..........Give him the £540 that was agreed at the start, it was up to him to ask the questions not you to tell him
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
