IGT Gas charge

Hi
I live in a new block of flats and when I moved in I signed up with Powergen for my Gas. They told me that my gas pipes where independent so I have to pay a dayly IGT charge on top of my gas bill.
I didn't really query it at the time, but now I am moneysaving, please can someone tell me more information about this? Looking at my last bill, it looks like I'm paying about £50 a year in IGT charges  I hardly use any gas so this is quite a big whack on my bill.
Is this charge exactly the same amount with every provider? If not, how can I compare them? Is there any way of avoiding the charge all together? I feel quite ripped off
Thanks in advance for any information.

I've just found the letter I was sent when I joined up. It says " As your gas supply is maintained by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT), rather than Transco, you'll incur an additional annual charge of £42.00 (including VAT). This charge will be shown on your bill and works out at less than 12p a day."
12p a day  Maybe I'm tight but I think thats quite a lot for nothing in return. Is this all because the builder got the gas pipes fitted cheaper or something? :rolleyes:Proud to be a MoneySaver!

This is something most new build houses suffer from. All seems very sneeky to me. Between £30 and £40 a year more for invisible benefits0

Its exactly that. They got the pipes installed cheaper then using transco to do them.0 -
Thanks for your replies. So is there any way of reducing this charge by switching? Or does the IGT charge 12p a day?

You may gain £10 a year by switching but if you are IGT then theres not escaping it I'm afraid. The IGT charge is never sent out very clearly on any of the sites I have used either0 -
Don't know of any suppliers yet that remove this charge for you. Sorry.0

British Gas and Atlantic don't charge for IGT.
Just drop them an email and they should confirm it.
Wouldn't recommend British Gas though. I've been having a nightmare with online billing!0 -
Good Good, Powergen Don't as well as I posted on another thread - Powergens is limited to Gas Guarantee only at present so bear that in mind.
Anyone know if Bgas and Atlantic is set to all tariffs or an individual one?0
