does anyone know where I can get my handed on a vga cable to connect my laptop to another monitor and what price I should be looking to pay for a good one 
and any info on a good place to get external hard drives wold also be welcome

You should be able to pick up a good VGA cable at any computer hardware store.
I would however recommend Maplin’s as a good start. Both online and in store would be excellent fior hard-drives alsoMarketing and web design guy. FIRE enthusiast.0 -
About £3 on eBay for the cable or several times that for probably the same quality from PC World or other high street outlet.
Hard drives - use google product search and go by the seller ratings. You should also check Amazon as they don't show up and as post is usually free often work out cheapest. I'd personally avoid eBay for HDD and stick with reputable sellers.0
