I'm off to Oz soon too and I am planning on taking some cash and the rest travellers cheques, Then withdrawing from my bank account when I run out of the physical cash (hopefully that will be at the end of the trip)

Have you considered using one of these prepaid cards like Fairfax?

I've had a look but can't find one that you can pre load with AUS$
It seems to have to pre load with GBP and then there is commission to change it to AUS$

You could try Travelex as they do prepaid cards in australian dollars. Other prepaid cards probably do it too.

Don't be surprised if the Aussie banks charge you to cash Travellers Cheques (even when they are in Aussie dollars). When my friend came over in 2007 she was charged about $15 a cheque
