exhaust emission with a difference?

I own an old (2001) Vauxhall Vectra (Vectra B 1.8 LS petrol) which I have owned from almost new.
Recently, after longish runs (airport trips etc) I have found what appears to be what looks like "horse hair" - (don't laugh) sticking out the tail pipe. You could pull out clumps of the stuff - enough to make a good ponytail (pardon the pun). This has happened after each long run.
At first I thought that some prankster had stuffed someting up the exhaust but I am perplexed as to why it keeps happening.
The car has only had a replacement rear silencer around 3 years ago and perfvormance does not appear to have changed. The car also passed it's MOT in Jan this year.
Any thoughts please?
Regards
