Advice needed re Service History Book

Hi all
Seven weeks ago i bought a 2009 VXR Corsa from a reputable dealership.
After signing all relevant documents and completing the handover, we drove out of the garage happy with the service and deal that we'd been given. However once home, i thought i'll have a read through the cars manual. We'd been told that the manual would be in the car, but despite searching high and low, it was nowhere to be found. The following day i reported this to the dealership, who said that it was probably still wit the garage team, from when they had serviced the car.
we dropped back to the garage who said that the couldn't find the one for my car, so gave me one from another car. My big concern is that I'd expected to find my cars Service History Book with the Manual, the garage have ordered another one for me but 7 weeks on a still haven't received it,despite me hounding the garage on a weekly basis.
Can anyone advise me on where i stand with the garage. i was under the impression that with new and used cars the service history should come with the car. the car is only a year old, so all I'm expecting the book to have is its first registration and the service the garage did before selling it on to me. am i right to think that should i decide to sell the car on, its actually going to lose me money for not having the document? What stance should i take with the dealership?
on a side point i was also sold the car cleaning protection solution, which wasn't in the car either, again we mentioned this when we explained about the service history book and were told that they would order this in for me. I'm yet to receive it.
Sorry if this is long winded, thanks for reading if you've got this far.:)

Don't believe dealers when they say they have just serviced the car prior to picking it up. The book pack is probably still with the previous owner.

As Lee says, don't believe main dealers, but not just on if they serviced it, not at all.

I took my Mondeo to Ford a few years back, after they did a service they told me I needed three new wheel bearings, after taking it to another garage (my very friendly local one) they siad all the wheel bearings had not a slight bit of play, 3 years on, passed its MOT every time with no work on the wheel bearings.

When I confronted Ford about it, they denied they said it needed them, even though I had the advice sheet signed by them claiming it did need replacing.

Main dealers are in the game for one thing, getting the most money they can, customer service is second!

    Hi

Around 9 years ago I boughtg a 10 month old Vectra from a West London car supermarket (still got it).

It was obviously an ex-fleet car and I was told that as it was registered affter a certain date, it was covered by VX 3 yeaqr waranty.

Like you, when I got home I noticed the service book was for cars prior to the change and showed different waranty/service details.

I checked with my local main delear who confirmed car was indeed covered by the latest terms so all was well. They said that hire fleets often keep all books centrally and had probably mixed up the books.

Rather that go all the way bak to London, I ordered the latest book from the main dealer and contacted the company that supplied the vehicle. I posted them the new book and they kindly stamped it up with the PDI details etc and included a print-out of the service completed.

I would certainly keep on to the dealer who supplied your car as it should be possible to get all the necessary information together and supply you with the updated records.

    Good luck.
    Phil

All main dealers servicing is computerised, just give them the reg. and the service history will come up.

You will only get work done in the Vauxhall dealer network this way but on a 12 month old car that really should be all of it.
  • A service history is not automatically supplied with a used car. With a new car you get a PDI and manual. Likewise there is no automatic right to a user manual on second hand cars. If the dealer promised you either of these things then obviously you should get them and it would be upto him to rectify matters.

If your seller is a Vauxhall main dealer it should be easy for him to get the relevant information if any servicing has been carried out by himself or another Vauxhall main dealer including the PDI.

If your seller is not a Vauxhall main dealer and you were promised a service history then put the onus onto him to obtain the information either from the previous owner or the Vauxhall dealer network. If you were not promised these items then you may have to do this work yourself.

If the seller serviced the car prior to you collecting it he must have those details readily to hand and can add these to any other service history obtained.

If you were promised the SH and manual and this influenced your buying decision then you may have a claim against the dealer for misrepresentation. You will then have to decide what you want in terms of compensation.

To get a simple cash sum, max £5,000, may be easy throught the fast track of the County Court with costs not normally awarded to either party. Deciding on an amount will possibly need expert advise.

If it not already too late then rejecting the car when the seller wont cooperate will involve a long hard fight. It will also be expensive, solicitors, but you will get your costs back if you win but will have to pay the sellers costs if you lose. You will have to stop using the car and take care of it while in you possession.

I don't know what cleaning protection solution is but can't you just ask for you money back as the seller has not supplied it.
  • Hi Guys

Thanks for all of your responses, and my apologies for my late response to you all, i hadn't recieved any notification that people had replied to my thread.:(
Just a quick update, i'm on holiday for the next few weeks and plan to hound the dealership until the supply me with the service history as they had promised to provide. i'll also b asking for a refund on the Car Care system, as mentioned i'm paying for a product that i havent recieved.
i have to say though that i really cant believe the poor aftercare service that i have recieved thus far. i haven't recieved one call back despite the numerous calls that i've made to them, there's nothing that galls me more than having to chase companies...phew, rant over :p

    Thanks again everyone
