I live in Herts, just outside London, and organised Currys to deliver and plumb in a washing machine on Mon. (paid £17.50 for them to plumb it in as well).

When they got here they said they couldnt plumb it in something about not finding the tap to turn off and remove the other one (which athough broken, washes but just uses cold water).

I explained that when they fitted this last washing machine 2 yaers ago also from Currys (only 2 years old and broken although a Bosch, there was no problem plumbing it in) but this guy didnt seem to know what he was doing and left it in the middle of the living room.

I have had a couple of quotes to plumb it in later this week but at £70-£75 seems alot. Does this seem OK.

I guess as Currys werw charging £17.50 I expected it would be about £40? (That £17.50 is being refunded by the way)

Thanks for your help.

Can't you have a go at doing it yourself? They usually have a fairly straightforward instruction book, and if I can do it with my 2 left thumbs and complete lack of diy knowhow, anyone can.
(Although I didn't realise the new one was cold water feed only whereas the old one was hot and cold, so I had to phone a friend because I thought I'd lost a pipe.:o)

virtually all modern washing machines are cold fill only. so just the one pipe needed.
the hot water pipe (if you have one) can be blanked off.

    very very simple job.
    Get some gorm.
  • Youtube has plenty of videos showing you how to plumb in the washing m/c ............. But make sure you remove all the packing and the transit bolts. Make sure that the m/c is level aswell !

There is also a video from Currys showing you how !!!

The term 'plumbing in' is probably not the correct terminology. What you require is for the machine to be 'connected'. Any Handyman type person would do this for £30 - £40. The quotes you have had of £75 seem to be for a plumber to install a waste and cold water feed which isn't waht you need.

If its cold inlet only then you can buy a blanking plug for the hot.I did a quick fix for my own by getting the screw on part of the old hose and inserting a 2p wrapped in ptf tape which sealed fine.
All the washers I've connected( I am not a plumber but have done my own and mums when I was younger)It was a case of simply turning off the water by closing the valve on the water feed pipes, twisting on 1 or 2 inlet pipes until they were tight and shoving the waste pipe into your drain(usually on same pipeline as the sink).
The £17.50 is probably a standard 15 mins rate or something. If you have a washer installed already I don't see why it should take any longer than that to swap them over.Of course if you call a plumber out to do it they will probably have a minimum charge of 1/2 an hour to an hour.

you will be lucky to get a plumber out for an hours charge. unless the first hour is charged at say 50 quid.
most charge half a day minimum.
    hence the 75 quid quote.

Easy to do, i've done all mine, you can buy a small kit with everything you need for a few quid.

My OH had one plumbed in about 3 years ago and was charged £25. It's literally a 5 minute job so shouldn't cost too much, you are just covering their travel time etc as well.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

All worked ou well I went to a site called 'rate a trader' and a lovely guy came round, plumbed it in adding a new tap to the pipe work so can be used in future and he even took the old one away. All for £50. So well pleased in the end.:j

Just the info I needed. :) I was wanting to put my washing machine in a large understair cupboard/shed. It has the water pipes running through it, but would need a waste, and an electric point.

Glad you got it sorted. I've had similar problems with Currys in the past myself - last time I bought a new machine I used Boots Kitchen Appliances (recommended by a neighbour) and they did an excellent job.
