2bed flat, 2 people, how much for bills?

Options
Good afternoon all,

I’m new to the forum, so first of all apologies if I posted this in the wrong place.

I’m after some advice regarding bills and how much I can expect to pay. I’ve only ever paid rents inclusive of bills so am clueless.

I will be sharing a 2-bed flat in London (Tower Hamlets) with my sister, who is a full-time student, so I’ve been told this will entitle me to a 25% reduction on council tax but would like to confirm this.

Secondly, I wanted to ask people if they don’t mind sharing what they pay bills wise (particularly people who are in a similar living situation to mine and a similar part of the country, but obviously anyone who can shed light on it give me your thoughts!)

I especially wanted to hear about what people pay per month in-
- water
- electricity
- gas
- contents insurance.

As these are the ones I have had difficulty pinpointing but also any others you wish to share feel free to give me an idea!

Cheers in advance for any advice you can offer

    Hi Ricardao,

It depends in the person I suppose, my first flat mate an I paid £300 a month between us and that was a little to much. You do also get 25% of your council tax as you are a full-time student, or if you lived on your own no council tax at all!

The second person I lived with basically left the heating on all the time and the bills went sky high. So it all depends on how much things are used.

My energy bill for 2 bed flat with gas central heating and gas cooker is £70 per month. Really depends on consumption and energy efficiency of the property.

You should be able to find out the cost of the water bill by contacting Thames Water - likely to be £20-30 a month.

My bills for a two bed shared flat in London were approximately:

    Water - £150 a year, paid twice a year (ie £75 every 6 months)
    Electricty approx £35-40 per month
    Gas approx £35-40 per month
Contents insurance approx £130 per annum.

Do not assume a flat will have a gas supply, many are electric only which is far more expensive per KWH than gas.
