No refund as item opened

I bought a toilet seat from discountedheating.co.uk. It was a bottom fixing seat which is not suitable for my pan. They told me to send it back -they were supposed to refund me - and order a new one. So I ordered the new one but it didn't fit so I sent that back too. They've refused to refund both on the basis of hygiene as the items were opened. I'm now almost 100 pounds out of pocket including postage and packaging fees and stuck with two toilet seats I can't use. They refer to the sales of goods act 1979 which they claim puts them in the right - even though the OFT distance selling regulations say you can't withhold refunds.
They're obviously still working in the 70s - steer clear if I were you.

have you copied them a link of the DSR (unless it was over 7 working days before you noticed them )The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

They could argue that they areDoesnt the DSRs have allowances for things like this, and such were excluded for hygene reasons?
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2000/20002334.htm (13c)goods that by reason of their nature cannot be returned
And lets face it, returning an opened loo seat is a bit.... well, what about the next person who gets it?
I know it wasn't used in this case, but eww. This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine:kisses2: Fiancee of the "lovely" DaveAshton :kisses2:I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine.

how was it packaged ? was it just in a box or was it wrapped in cellophane and then in a box ? if its the latter then then they maybe have a case as you would not need to open any cellophane to see it was unsuitable. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
