Powergen and British Gas Account Debacle

Hello all,

I wonder if anyone can help as I am having the most irritating time of it with these two companies.

I moved into my property at the beginning of the year and cancelled the existing British Gas account to switch to Powergen. POwergen told me they would take care of everything in the transfer and cancel the BG account.

However I am still receiving bills from BG and tried to tell them the acocunt should have been cancelled. However they had no notification of the cancellation and i was forced to pay both companies for my gas!

After several calls it transpired that Powergen had given BG the wrong Meter Point Reference number, therefore BG say Powergen should refund my bills for the year, while Powergen say BG are at fault. I cant seem to get either company to budge and I am owed hundreds of pounds.

I have written letters to both and never get any reply. Whenever i phone i am told the matter will be looked into, but i hear nothing.

What can i do to get my money back?
Any help appreciated!
Thanks

  • Thanks. I'm really sorry for you, but reading this has convinced me - again - not to switch supplier. I was tempted, but reading this and I've come back to my senses.

Hi Bigmig, how would your new supplier know the gas meter reference point number, unless you or BG told them.
And having sent a letter asking for info and not receiving a reply is to your gain, especially if you have a copy of the letter.
Just the sort of thing ENERGYWATCH are looking for.You should ask for compensation from both.Especially if your notification to BG initially was in writing.

Best thing to do is to ring transco tomorrow with your address find out who is supplying definately and whoever isn't insist that you have your money returned.

In reply to ken68 - Suppliers can find out supply numbers for every property in the UK via there own Meter Point Administration Services.

And who is to say they got the letter - Unless he sent it recorded delivery?
  • I had this problem too, both blaming each other.. BG put the first 4 digits of my electric reading as my gas and sent me a bill for £2085 for 3 weeks worth..
At the time i as renovating the house, didn't live here and the place didn't even have a boiler.
Then they aid they had sent someone round to read the meter - they were correct and i was lying!!!!
the read they had was 4096... that was in Jan and i'm still only on 2084ish.
    Useless
