Is it true the older you get the harder it is to shift excess weight?
Im working out and trying to eat healthily in my late thirties now but weight is slowly shifting, im working out 3 times a week more if I can by using my exercise bike for 45 mins and then jogging on the spot and finally some stretches over my exercise ball. I always build up a good sweat. Im 5'2 high weigh 9st 6 lbs I think I have only lost 1lb in past 2 weeks :eek:
When I was mid twenties weight came off easier and quiker if I worked out.

Dont be down hearted, a one pound loss is much better than one pound gain, also the longer it takes to loose weight, the more likely it is to stay off, usually loosing weight quickly reslts in it going back on again plus more - so they say.
You have to remember aswell that doing excersise will build muscle, which will weigh more fat.
Keep positive and you will get there.

depends on if you keep exercising or not
most people get lazy as they get older and so they loose there lean muscle mass which means there metabolic rate is lower making it hard to loose weight
governor arnie is 62 and still packs an impressive amount of muscle
but you can put it back on and shift weight

Yes, it is true, I'm following the same diet I lost loads on a few years ago and it just ain't shifting;)I don't exercise, never have done and I can see a huge change in my metabolism for no apparent reason, actually I am losing but very very slowly, it most annoying and boring:mad:Lose it now and keep it off is my advice:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
Yes it is annoying when the weight takes forever to shift, I bought a new folding exercise bike £40 reduced from £80 so I can park it front of tv which makes a bit less boring to shift the calories!
when I was about 28 my pills for depression (not on them now) Seroxat made my weight jump from 9st to 10st I lost that extra stone very quickly by using a bike and cutting out some sugary food.
But now it is hard work:mad: but want to lose half a stone maybe a bit more0 -
I was told by someone in the medical profession that it's much more difficult after 40, simply because of the general slowing down of your body.

Basically true. Bob is surely an exception. He was known to walk on the treadmill for 8 hours straight ...he was seriously committed. I am only losing at 1lb a week atm and am very frustrated, but I have a lot more than you to lose and as your BMI is already under 25 it is going to be hard. 1 lb a week is 4 stone in a year, that is how I think about it and I'm damn sure I'm not going to lose weight on what I was eating. You are probably a size 12 and have less than 6 pounds to los. My goal is higher than you weigh already and i am your height.0

There is a recognised physiological reason, and it's called 'sarcopenia' (look this up). Muscle loss which gradually happens as we get older, starting in the 30s.
However, there is also evidence that 'use it or lose it' i.e. keep exercising, keep doing resistance training either on machines or with weights, and the process can be slowed down. There is also evidence that some of it can be regained if resistance exercise is started in later life. There is a LOT to be said for keeping active and flexible throughout life, no matter how late it gets. Keeping the leg muscles strong helps prevent falls, for instance, and falls are a big cause of death - hip fractures leading to death from pneumonia.

yes I want to lose roughly 6 lbs as I am between size 10 and 12 and when the size 12's start to get tight around the waste I know its time to shift some weight... just wish it was easier.

I am only 30, and in the last year have already noticed this - I can't shift it!!
When I was 29 (oh so long ago, lol) I could not eat much for 2 days, and just shift the excess weight straightaway...now I could not eat for 1 week, and no difference
I really need to start exercising, I never used to need to - I have put on a whole stone in the last yr :eek:We got rid of the kids. The cat was allergic.
