Errors? You mean alerts?
Ah, that means you probably had McAfee or Norton installed before...
Did you use the relevant removal tools to remove your old AV product completely?-if not then your new one may not function properly. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I setup machines and teach new users
I find
AVG to be the simplest solution

no hassle setting up
it just works
and updates automatically.

It beat Mcafeee and norton (symantec) by near half again in detection0 -

Norton was installed originally but I did not renew this. So I un-install norton then re-install avast again?0 -

Beating Norton and MCaffee is not exactly a guarantee of good performance. I used to use AVG, but the free version has gone downhill in the last couple of years and I would never use or recommend it now.
Avira, Avast or MSE are much better free productsNo free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Uninstall Norton, then use the Norton Removal Tool (Google it) to flush out all the carp it leaves behind.
Avast should then work OK, but do a clean reinstall if unsure.
But Kaspersky is better IMHO.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
If you really want anti-virus software that requires minimal interaction you should follow i8Change's advice and install Microsoft's Security Essentials. It has performed extremely well in group tests. The reason I don't use it - I'm using Comodo's at the moment, but may switch back to Avira - is because I like to have as much control over my PC as possible.0

Yes, I havent used AVG for the last couple of years, it really went down hill and I didnt trust it any longer
Clair, get your banking stuff sorted because you get the whole Kaspersky suite rather than just an anti virus program0
