Correct, it is nothing to do with them. You can, if you wish ask them why they want the information, but you are not obliged to supply them with the details they are asking for.

Try, replying with the message, 'You tell me yours, and I'll tell you mine" :D

Are you sure they didn't mean meter numbers? My meter numbers and supplier are listed on the inventory so after check out it can be proven that all bills are paid.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

Seems a sensible move by the letting agent tbh. If you moved into a property and the next day you were cut off due to the last tenant not paying up, would you be annoyed? Seems to me the letting agent may be trying to mitigate the risk of this on their tenants - sounds like a very good agent.

How else do you make sure your tenant, when they leave, has settled all their bills?

    1) Ask to see final bill statements along with confirmation of payment - difficult once the tenant has gone.
    2) Simply write to suppliers and ask if account number X is settled

That's rubbish. As long as the tenant has the utility in their name then the util company will chase them for any non payment. It's not a house thing, it's a person thing.

it coudl be that the previous tenant may have changed suppliers without informing the agent or LL - this happens a lot and as a LL it is very frustrating when you dont know who supplies your property.. but i agree.. no need for them to know your account number

i seen no issue in giving the supplier and the meter number

they have said its because they need to know who owes some money, if its the landlord or the old owner of the home

    Not your debt
    Not your problem

I wouldn't give them the info
Any debt left by previous tenant will not fall on you (providing you gave the meter readings on moving in)
Meter readings should also be on your check in inventory
