Find nearest gas main

Does anyone know if there's an easy way to find out the location of the nearest gas main?

I've tried calling the National Grid and they have been pretty useless. The house is located in Biggleswade, bedfordshire if this helps.

It's currently heated using oil and I'm wondering whether getting a gas connection will be a lot cheaper in the long run.

Thanks
A

Surely if you contact Briish Gas (or whoever - can't remember the name of the contractor they referred me to when I last enquired) & ask for a quote they will provide this information?

Are you thinking of drilling it yourself?

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Contact the National Grid Plant Protection team. They may be able to quickly advise you.

For those of you who come across this thread and wish to get a quote for a gas connection then I wished to point out that who you go to for a quote may depend on area you are in and which Gas Transporter owns the nearest gas mains.

A good starting point to get a quote is Ofgem website > Consumers > Consumer Issues > New Connections & Meter Moves

    ofgem gov uk /Consumers/CI/ncamm/Pages/ncamm.aspx

But if you are using LPG, Oil or Solid Fuel in a domestic premise then you may be able to get help in form of grants for switching to Natural Gas or if in an off gas area other carbon saving alternatives, as part of installing new heating system along with insulation etc. Either way getting a quote (or budget indication) for gas connection is a good start to finding looking at options.

Note there are several different schemes such as Fuel Poor and worth ensure get full information on all that may apply.

If the boundary of your domestic premise is over 23m from nearest Gas Main which you should find out when you receive quote it may be worth get further quotes from other Utility Infrastructure Providers (UIPs). For all commercial connections it could be worth shopping around too.

A list can be found on website of SBGi
    sbgi org uk /UIP
or Loyds Register list of GIRS companies.

I hoped to include some url links but anti spam prevents me putting in full links hopefully enough above to search for them but please do message me for them if you wish.
