What exactly do credit card companies consider as 'purchases'?

I am looking to get the 0% for 12months Tesco credit card and I was wondering what they consider to be a 'purchase'? I am buying a car from a friend and I could send the cash to his paypal account rather than cash-in-hand as the 0% does not cover withdrawals or transfers. I was wondering if credit card companies consider a Paypal account as a legit purchase?

I know this is probably a daft question but I never use credit cards so I'm pretty clueless.

PayPal transactions are charged as purchases.

This is a commonly used method for extracting cash from a credit card at purchase interest rates / introductory offers. I've done it myself several times. You'll be fine

No its not a daft question and i myself have often wondered similar querries in regards to paypal.

I haven't tried it yet but would like to see if Amex classify paypal payments as rebate elligable...

Do you mean in terms of using section 75? If so it implies here that they are not http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/section75-protect-your-purchases#exceptions

Yeah, for that (faulty good etc) and also for cashback, rewards and so on. Some puchases, such as onlne gambling and what not are exhempt, is paypal exhempt as well? From what i see of your link and info on section 75, there is an exhemption, not sure about whether they would see it the same for rewards and stuff like that. (Nothing mentionned in the T&C and even their customer services is not really sure).
